Benefits of Membership in the OES

In addition to the benefits associated with the parent IEEE the OES offers interested professionals a technical forum for all technologies related to ocean engineering as evidenced by our many technical committees, chapters, conferences, awards, and publications.

Members can stay technologically current by networking with each other through attendance at local chapter meetings, OCEANS XX conferences, participation on a technology committee, or submitting technical articles to the OES Journal. The society presently has chapters centered in central New England, Canada (Atlantic Coast), New Orleans, Hawaii, Houston/Galveston, San Diego, Seattle, Victoria B.C., and Washington D.C.. If there is not a local chapter in your area the OES will gladly help to establish one. See the page on chapters for more information.

OES publishes and distributes to its members both a journal with peer reviewed articles and a newsletter that contains items of interest to the ocean community. Both are published on a quarterly basis.

The OES originated the OCEANS conference series and currently cosponsers the series with the Marine Technology Society, thus affording the marine community one well grounded conference to accommodate both state of the art exhibits and excellent technical papers.

OES presents two awards each year at the OCEANS conference: the Distinguished Technical Achievement Award and the Distinguished Service Award. The former is to recognize superior contributions to ocean engineering technology and the latter is presented to individuals who have made substantial service contributions to the OES. The OES also has an on-going effort to recognize members technical and/or professional achievements by promoting members to Senior or Fellow Grade in the IEEE and OES.

If you are currently an IEEE member or student member you may join the society simply by noting the society on your annual renewal form and paying the required fee ($19 annually). If you are not an IEEE member you will have to complete an application to join the IEEE and submit the required fee for the IEEE as well as the OES fee.

Remember that Membership begins with ME. You will only find the society beneficial if you participate. For more information and forms for joining the IEEE and/or the OES please click on Membership.  Questions relative to the society should be referred via email to the Membership Development Chair.
