Welcome to Global OCEANS 2021: San Diego – Porto
The OCEANS 2021 conference continues strong, and now has become even stronger. With the European conference delayed due to the pandemic, the Porto, Portugal, OCEANS 2021 spring conference team has joined forces with the San Diego team to bring you Global OCEANS 2021, with both an in/person and virtual presence possible. While we hope to see as many attendees as possible enjoy the in-person conference in San Diego, everyone who wishes to attend worldwide will have a venue available to enjoy the significant benefits of the conference not found anywhere else in 2021 – technical innovation, scientific research, and high-level agency and commercial budget and investment briefings. In addition, come and enjoy the in-person joint kickoff with the United Nations of its IOC “Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development”.
For the benefit of all attendees, whether in-person or virtual, both San Diego and Porto will hold, or present, their plenaries, workshops, etc., during the standard OCEANS schedule and in their respective time zones. All technical papers, whether virtual, or in-person, will be uploaded and on line.
We are presently updating the San Diego website to reflect the new hybrid conference and it will be updated by the end of January. In the meantime, especially for potential exhibitors, the existing website will remain on line at: https://sandiego21.oceansconference.org/
Please continue to look for the release of the Call for Abstracts for Global OCEANS 2021: San Diego – Porto, which will be posted in late January.
We hope to see everyone in-person in San Diego, where you will hear from our Honorary Chairs from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the United Nations IOC, as well as speakers from various federal agencies. And also join the virtual presentations that will be coordinated by our Porto team members.

The OCEANS 2021 San Diego committee invites you to beautiful San Diego to participate in the world’s most prestigious, comprehensive, and diverse conference and exposition regarding our most critical resource—the oceans. Coordinated with the kickoff of the United Nations “Decade of Ocean Science (2021-2030), this will be the 8th time the OCEANS conference has come to San Diego, a venue that has consistently provided the largest and most successful OCEANS conferences ever.
OCEANS 2021 San Diego will expand significantly in scope, bringing together key international industry and government stakeholders, focusing on investment plans/strategies during the upcoming five years as well as emerging technologies, new science and research initiatives, and the latest in commercial products.
In addition to the excellent technical program for which OCEANS is well known, OCEANS 2021 San Diego will be structured with three key underlying categories of interest to all attendees:
- “InFocus” – on the latest in new and emerging technologies
- “InQuire” – on innovative research and science
- “InVest” – investment strategies and spending priorities from high-level stakeholders and officials from the U.S. and international governments, the oil and gas industry, Departments of Defense and Energy, local and federal regulatory agencies and a wide range of ocean industries.
The theme for OCEANS 2021 San Diego is “Sustaining our Oceans . . . Sustaining our Future,” reflecting on the critical nature and importance of our industry and its sustaining technologies. New Technical tracks will include Artificial Intelligence (AI), the great challenge of Data Management, Arctic and Antarctic exploration, and will present emerging technologies for ocean stewardship, food supply production and management, national defense, energy production, and overall management of the oceans and waterways. Assuring a successful conference will be committee members from the highly successful 2013 and 2003 San Diego OCEANS conferences along with new, influential and highly capable technical, academic and business leaders. Your OCEANS committee is working diligently to bring together influential buyers, investors, stakeholders, industry experts, and innovators from government agencies, industry, and academia.
The OCEANS conferences, jointly sponsored by the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society (IEEE/OES) and the Marine Technology Society (MTS), attract thousands of attendees and hundreds of exhibitors every year. These international conferences are a major forum for scientists, engineers and those with an interest in the oceans to gather and exchange their knowledge and ideas regarding the future of the world’s oceans. In addition, OCEANS 2021 San Diego will include a two-night film festival and weekend golf tourney to kick-off the week’s activities that will also include a day of tutorials and a gala banquet.
We look forward to welcoming you to San Diego.

Postponed to August
The Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) Board of Directors has chosen to postpone the 2021 event to 16–19 August due to the ongoing challenges presented by COVID-19 and out of the greatest care for the health and safety of our partners, attendees, exhibitors, staff, and community.
In the coming weeks, OTC will be communicating with authors, speakers, exhibitors, and partners to develop new in-person and virtual plans and ensure the conference continues to provide a platform for energy professionals to meet and exchange ideas.
By postponing OTC to the second half of 2021, we aim to preserve the significant work of the program committee and authors, as well as minimize the economic impact this decision has on businesses in Houston and throughout the industry.
We look forward to welcoming you to Houston in August 2021.
More information will be communicated as plans are finalized. Visit 2021.otcnet.org

We hope to be able to meet in person in sunny and safe Palma de Mallorca but please know that ASLO will continue to assess the COVID-19 global situation. Every effort will be made to meet in person for summer 2021 but should that not be possible, we will provide information and guidance for best possible alternatives.
Planning began several years ago for the ASLO 2021 Aquatic Sciences Meeting to return to Europe – Palma de Mallorca, Spain. Located on the largest of the Balearic Islands, this site borders Mediterranean waters that are important both ecologically and economically. Underdeveloped to developed societies face different levels of sustainability problems in aquatic resources and cooperation is a keyword in which relevant information is shared to find solutions. Opportunities for discussion will range from plenary talks, special sessions, as well as workshops and town halls.
Palma de Mallorca is an ideal location for international aquatic scientists to meet and learn from each other´s successes in managing sustainability challenges. This contributes to ASLO’s ongoing global development for educators, students, policy makers, and other scientists to cooperate across the boundaries of land and water.
Culturally, Palma is very rich. Blending histories that range from the Roman and Byzantine Empires to modern Spain, evidence of these societies is visible in ancient roads, architecture, markets, and modern technology.
Meeting Schedule
The ASLO 2021 Aquatic Sciences Meeting was originally scheduled to begin in late February. Due to COVID-19, the date had to be rescheduled to June. ASLO meetings normally begin on Sunday with an opening plenary and reception, then conclude on Friday – with the scientific program scheduled Monday through Friday. Due to the new 2021 dates, the Sunday through Friday pattern had to be changed to Tuesday through Sunday, with the opening plenary and reception on Tuesday, then the scientific program running Wednesday through Sunday.
Meeting Venue
Congress Palace of Palma (Palau de Congresos de Palma) features state-of-the-art meeting space and technology. Opened in 2017, it has unique architecture and an excellent location in Palma. Views of the Mediterranean Sea are featured, as well as the city – both ancient and modern.
The facility has a responsible management program, combining minimum impact on the environment with technology and comfort for meeting participants.
