The 2018 IEEE 8th International Conference on Underwater System Technology: Theory and Application (IEEE USYS’18) was held in Wuhan, China from 1 to 3 December 2018. The IEEE USYS 2018 was sponsored by the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society, co-organized by the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society Malaysia Chapter and Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST). This conference is one of the important academic conferences in the field of naval architecture and ocean engineering. It aims to provide a platform for researchers, scientists, engineers, academicians, as well as industrial professionals from all over the world to share, discuss and disseminate their current R&D activities and experiences related to the field of underwater technology, including relevant theories as well as applications. The outcomes from this event are proceedings and journal publication, academic exchange among the participants, research network, and collaboration.
The IEEE USYS’18 received more than 140 papers with 123 papers presented during the conference. The conference started with a workshop on Marine Robots on 1 December 2018. The Opening Ceremony was held on 2 December followed by 4 plenary speeches and 8 oral sessions. Moreover, on the last day, 3 December, 6 keynote talks were presented, followed by 8 oral sessions, the award banquet, and closing ceremony. Two best paper awards were presented. One was in the application category, which was awarded to Khalid Isa, Herdawatie Abdul Kadir and Radzi Ambar from Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) for the paper entitled “Design and Development of an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) with Target Acquisition Mission Module.” On the other hand, the best paper in the theory category was awarded to Yueqi Yang, Zhengxing Wu, and Junzhi Wu from CASIA for the paper entitled “Fault-Tolerant Speed Control of a Biomimetic Multijoint Robotic Fish.” The plenary and keynote speakers for the conference were António M. Pascoal (Portugal), Decheng Wan (China), Guang Pan (China), Fumin Zhang (U.S.), Francesco Maurelli (Germany), Lionel Lapierre (France), Guohua Xu (China), Jiancheng Yu (China), Nikola Miškovic´ (Croatia) and Simon Rohou (France).
In conclusion, the IEEE USYS’18 was successfully organized and received excellent feedback from all participants. All the great activities were well managed, and Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) was a great conference host. The next IEEE USYS conference will be held in 2020.
