Cultivating the next generation of Oceanic Engineers
The IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society (OES) is dedicated to nurturing the talents and ambitions of students who aspire to make their mark in the field of oceanic engineering. Our Student Activities program provides a platform for students to connect, learn, and embark on a journey of exploration, innovation, and collaboration.

The Career Networking Exhibition Tours (CNET) organized by IEEE Houston Section volunteers and chapter volunteers proved to be a resounding success, thanks to the collaborative efforts of YP BOOST Laureate Amy Deeb, IEEE Houston Section volunteers Christopher Sanderson and Cheryl Windom, and Chapter volunteers Michael Romer and In Chul Jang. The event saw the guidance of 4 dedicated mentors, including Christopher Sanderson, Cheryl Windom, Arvind Bhardwaj, and IEEE OES WIE Liaison and Administrative Committee member Farheen Fauziya.
The event not only facilitated valuable career networking connections for the attending students but also opened doors to job opportunities, internships, and business prospects. Following a provided lunch and engaging discussions, the students continued to harness their newfound networking skills, making connections independently on the event floor. Witnessing the students confidently navigating the space and expanding their professional networks was truly gratifying. To capture and enhance the success of CNET, students will be surveyed to summarize their experiences, and a comprehensive guide will be crafted to serve as a blueprint for future IEEE OES events, including OCEANS.
The Berth of Opportunity run by the Schmidt Ocean Institute invites regional participants on their R/V expeditions. In 2024, R/V Falkor will venture to the depths off the west coast of South America, creating vital seafloor maps, gathering data to improve climate models, and searching for ecosystems on seamounts, seeps, canyons, and vents. The data collected will contribute to Chile and Peru’s stewardship of their Ocean environments and illuminate unknown marine realms.
Participants will split their time between contributing to the science team and community outreach activities like narrating livestreams in the local language and hosting ship-to-shores with different community groups.
The inaugural IEEE-OES Summer School is set to take place in Singapore on April 13-14, 2024, with the theme “Observing our Ocean.” This event, leading up to the Singapore OCEANS 2024 conference, marks the beginning of an exciting journey for graduate students and early-career professionals in the field of oceanic engineering. The program spans two days, featuring presentations by distinguished experts, hands-on exercises, group sessions, and social activities to encourage cross-disciplinary communication and networking. The Summer School aims to lay the foundation for future interactions, mentorship, research discussions, and the development of professional relationships within the oceanic engineering community.
Participation is open to graduate students and early-career professionals, with undergraduates welcome based on space availability. Applicants must be authors or co-authors of papers selected for the Singapore OCEANS 2024 program and registered for the conference, and attendees are expected to participate in all scheduled activities to receive a certificate of attendance.
The second Winter School on Underwater Network Simulations and Experimentation (UNWiS) is set to take place in Padova during the Venice Carnival, starting in late January 2024. Organized by the Department of Information Engineering at the University of Padova and Wireless and More srl, the week-long event will focus on the DESERT Underwater network simulation and experimentation framework.
The school will feature theoretical sessions on network simulation concepts and procedures, as well as practical sessions for implementing code, running experiments, and analyzing results. Two tracks, basic and advanced, are available to cater to different levels of expertise. The venue is the University of Padova, Department of Information Engineering, and the event will run from the early morning of January 29th to the late afternoon of February 2nd, 2023. For inquiries, the point of contact is Filippo Campagnaro at filippo.campagnaro@unipd.it with the email subject [UNWiS]. Additionally, participants are encouraged to stay longer to join the Venice Carnival festivities.
IEEE OES has a Student Branch Chapter (SBC) support program to provide financial support to SBC chairs or representative to attend the OCEANS conference where they will be involved in supporting the society, the conference and promoting student activities and participation. The financial support for travel to OCEANS will be based on the available funds and the activity of the SBCs.
To participate, the SBC should provide the OES VP for Professional Activities the name and contact information of the SBC chair or representative who is nominated to attend the next OCEANS conference.
